Secondly, while politics undoubtedly plays a role in hiring and promotion to at least some extent in all districts, in Woodbridge it played a major role. At this point, there is a significant gang problem in the township (chiefly Woodbridge "proper" and Avenel, but to some extent in all parts of the township), with these gangs being comprised of former urban dwellers and their "wanna-be" imitators. This resulted in a reduction in standards in the WT schools, and in the creation of an environment that became increasingly urban in feel over the years. While the parents moved their families from gritty urban areas to the more suburban environment of WT for very good reasons (primarily to put their kids in a better environment), unfortunately those urban transfer children and teenagers brought both their urban attitudes and their poor educational background with them. Why did Woodbridge's school system deteriorate markedly over the past 20+ years? In my opinion, there are two main factors.įirst, Woodbridge Twp had (and continues to have) a large influx of inner-city families moving in from urban areas with poor school systems. Woodbridge's schools are definitely better than those in Rahway, Linden, and Perth Amboy, but.
However, in comparison to almost all of the school systems in communities close to Woodbridge Twp-Westfield, Edison (there is no town of "North Edison"!!), Cranford, Clark, Highland Park, Metuchen, Kenilworth, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, East Brunswick-the Woodbridge Twp schools do not look good in comparison. Having spent 35 years as an educator with the Woodbridge Twp School District, I can tell you that, over the past 20 years or so, I witnessed a superior school system degenerate into one that is-at best-mediocre.
